Region-Wide - University of Maine at Machias, Center for Lifelong Learning
The LifeFlight 5K Challenge: The Couch-to-5K Running/Walking Plan is being sponsored by the Center For Lifelong Learning and led by personal trainer Marita Taylor
Yes, I know what you’re thinking. What am I talking about? A 5K? What? Crazy, I know, but think again and decide to take the challenge. The program is the Couch to 5K. It is possible! This is a nine- week program that prepares you to run a 5K. Every week the program gets a little harder and includes more running.
The first week includes: Three days (taking a break between days) of walking briskly for five minutes, then run 60 seconds, walk 90 seconds, run 60 seconds, for 20 minutes, then cool down walk for 5 minutes.
The Couch-to-5K is the beginner's running schedule that has helped thousands of new runners get off the couch and onto the roads, running three miles in just two months.
On Thursday, June 7, an informational meeting, couch-to-5K program packet, a review and introduction of the plan was held. On Tuesday, June 19, at the Center for Life Long Learning, at 5:15 pm, topics will include the importance of stretching.
On Monday, July 2, participants will meet at the Center for Life Long Learning at 6 pm to discuss the importance of hydration, assessing where everyone is, and questions and answers. On Thursday, July 19, Center for Life Long Learning, at 5:15 pm, the importance of nutrition will be discussed and a group run will take place. Week 5 is race week. On July 23, there will be a practice run.
