Cathal Breslin Piano Recital
Music
St. Andrews - All Saints Anglican Church - King Street
Beautiful piano music will fill the air as the St. Andrews Arts Council is bringing the a new venture, Piano Academy and International Festival (PAFI), to this seaside resort town in July.
About 30 students aged 10 to adult from Taiwan, China and the United States will participate in an intensive two-week program starting on Canada Day and ending July 13 with their participation in the 26th annual Gala Festival Concert.
Arriving with the students will be four top-notch pianists as faculty, plus chaperones and a translator. Each faculty member, as part of PAFI, will give a piano recital at All Saints Anglican Church.
Dr. Cathal Breslin of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, will present the fourth and final faculty concert on Monday, July 9. After studying at the Royal College of Music in London and the Royal Northern College of Music, he received a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan in 2008, where he was a Fulbright Scholar and teaching assistant.
In 2008 Breslin and his wife, American flutist Sabrina Hu, founded and became artistic directors of the Walled City Music Festival and Concert Series in Derry, Northern Ireland, with the aim of creating a brighter future for young musicians in that country – peace and reconciliation through music.
Born in Derry, Northern Ireland, a growing international career has taken him to concert halls throughout Europe, United States and Asia. In 2007 he was awarded the Bronze Medal at the Viotti International Piano Competition in Vercelli, Milan, a World Federation International Music Competition. Other international competition successes have included top prizes in "Carlet" in Valencia, "Grand Konzerteum" in Athens, and "Iowa" in the United States.
